On Joy

Joy is
in the wins
and the losses.

Joy is
in the beginning,
and the end.

Joy is
in the middle,
in the suffering,
struggle,
pain,
and uncertainty
in the unknown.

Joy is
in what you don’t enjoy,
in the wisdom you earn
when you learn to enjoy
what you need to enjoy
when it hurts.

3 ideas + 3 questions on joy, from me.

To say as little as possible on joy: enjoy the journey.

Three ideas for your journey:

  1. Joy is an expression of your natural way of being in the world.

  2. Joy is in the every day being and doing. Joy is not exclusively limited to celebrating your successes. Joy is in the wins and the losses. Joy is deep in the heart of uncertainty. Joy is in the deep place where you have forgotten where you are going and why you are going there.

  3. Joy doesn’t happen to you. Joy doesn’t choose you. Joy is a choice. Joy is a practice. If you choose Joy, you must choose to exercise it daily.

Plus, three questions:

  1. What defines joy for you?

  2. Do you find joy in your being and doing?

  3. Do you find joy in the midst of uncertainty?

3 insights on joy, from others.

Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.

Marianne Williamson

Joy lies in the fight, in the attempt, in the suffering involved, not in the victory itself.

Mahatma Gandhi

Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day

Henri Nouwen
